Infrared Sauna - What Is It?

Infrared Sauna Photo Infrared is a natural occurring output of the sun, but does not contain the harmful UV rays associated with unprotected sunlight. Infrared rays are completely safe and beneficial to the human body.

Being inside an infrared sauna is similar to lying in the sun on a warm day and feeling the soothing, natural warmth radiate to the core of your body. Unlike a traditional sauna (hot rock or steam) that operates at an air temperature in excess of 200°F, infrared heat has the benefit of being effective at a more comfortable operating temperature of 100° - 150°F. Traditional saunas heat the air, which can make the experience unbearably hot and difficult to breathe. Infrared heat penetrates the human body as opposed to heating the surface of the skin.

Developed by Sunlighten™, Beyond Esthetics Inc. uses Solocarbon® Full Spectrum (near, mid and far infrared) technology, customizable to safely and effectively target your health needs. Carbon heaters emit infrared heat at a lower, more constant temperature through large panels, thus creating even distribution of comforting heat throughout the sauna. This eliminates hot and cold spots that can occur in saunas that use ceramic rods.

Clinically-backed full spectrum blend precisely target health goals. Through extensive research it has been found that different parts of the infrared spectrum are more effective than others at targeting various health benefits. With this in mind, Solocarbon® Full Spectrum proprietary wavelengths were developed based on over 56 research studies for true health results.

Benefits of an Infrared Sauna:

Here are a few of the many benefits of using an infrared sauna on a regular basis...

  1. Weight Loss

Studies have shown that 30 minute infrared sauna weight loss sessions can burn upwards of 600 calories. During a sauna weight loss session, your core body temperate increases and your body works hard to cool itself. This causes an increase in your heart rate, metabolic rate and cardiac output, allowing you to burn calories. Regular use of an infrared sauna may be an effective means of cardiovascular conditioning and burning of calories. To maximize weight loss, this passive cardio workout should be augmented with regular exercise and eating healthy foods.
  2. Detoxification

We encounter thousands of toxins daily and when they cannot be expelled immediately, our bodies store them. When these toxins accumulate, blood circulation and cellular energy are impaired. By raising the body's core temperature, infrared saunas can produce a sweat composed of 20% toxins versus only 3% toxins with a traditional sauna. These stored toxins are composed of metabolic wastes, environmental toxins, fat, cholesterol, heavy metals, alcohol and nicotine. You can sweat 2-3 times more in an infrared sauna than in a traditional sauna. The leading detoxification principle is that illnesses can be caused by the build up of toxic substances. Ridding the body of these toxins can help relieve symptoms, prevent illness and increase overall health and vitality.
  3. Relaxation

Cortisol, a "fight or flight" hormone produced by the body increases with stress, raising heart rate and blood pressure. Scientific evidence shows that infrared therapy helps the body maintain healthy levels of cortisol and have been clinically shown to reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure with regular use. The warmth of the sauna will help to relieve stress, ease muscle tension and allow you to fully relax.
  4. Pain Relief

Infrared sauna heat works by penetrating joints, muscles and tissues, increasing circulation and speeding oxygen flow. By reducing soreness on nerve endings, infrared heat reduces muscle spasms and helps the body heal itself naturally. Many doctors recommend infrared therapy because of proven relief from sports injury, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, arthritis and chronic pain conditions.
  5. Blood Pressure Reduction

Infrared sauna therapy is both safe and effective in recovering damaged blood vessels and improving heart functions, regular sessions offer a preventive role for heart disease, especially in patients with high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol. Infrared sauna therapy reduces blood pressure by dilating blood vessels and decreasing the volume of their inner lining, thus increasing circulation to promote healthy blood pressure.
  6. Improved Circulation

Heating your muscles with infrared rays produces an increase in blood flow similar to exercise. Regular infrared sauna use, especially in the Mid Infrared range has been show to significantly stimulate blood flow, even after your sauna session is done.
  7. Skin Purification

Studies on infrared sauna therapy have shown improvements in skin complexion, tone, texture, elasticity and overall appearance. Sweating allows toxins, dead skin cells, and impurities to be released from the skin, leaving it fresher-looking and healthier. Rejuvenate your skin while also receiving all of the other health benefits associated with infrared sauna therapy.

  • Fever

  • Insensitivity to heat

  • Acute joint injury: within 48 hours of an injury or when the joint is hot and swollen

Other Cautions
  • Heating of the low back area of women during the menstrual period may temporarily increase menstrual flow. Some women endure this process to gain the pain relief commonly associated with their cycle, whereas others simply choose to avoid sauna use during that time of the month.

  • Those with cardiovascular conditions or problems should be monitored during infrared sauna use. Heart rate does increase with heat, so shorter periods of time are used to start.

  • Metal pins, rods, artificial joints or any other surgical implants generally reflect far-infrared waves and thus are not heated. Nevertheless you should consult your surgeon prior to using an infrared sauna. The usage of an infrared sauna must be discontinued if you experience pain near any such implants. Silicone does absorb far infrared energy. Implanted silicone or silicone prostheses for nose or ear replacement may be warmed by the far infrared waves. Since silicone melts at over 200°C (392°F), it should not be adversely affected by the usage of an infrared sauna. It is still advised that you check with your surgeon and possibly a representative from the implant manufacturer to be certain.

  • Clients with specific medical conditions will be asked to obtain written consent/approval from their doctor before receiving infrared sauna therapy.
In the rare event, you experience pain and/or discomfort, immediately discontinue sauna use.

Sauna Tips
  • Drink plenty of water before and after your session. Drinking water during is good too, but it will not contribute to more sweating, as it will still be in your stomach. For maximum sweat volume, reduce your intake of caffeine from coffee or pop.

  • Do not use lotions or oils on your skin as it will block the pores and reduce the body's ability to perspire.

  • Sit with one towel under your body and one under your feet. A third smaller towel can be used to wipe the sweat from your face.

  • Bathing attire is suggested but shorts and a T-shirt are fine or a spa wrap. Please bring your own.

  • Relax, forget all your worries.

  • A typical sauna session can run anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour, Start between 20 ~ 30 minutes, twice per week and increase based on your comfort level. After a few weeks, you may increase the length and frequency of your sessions.

  • At home, take a shower as soon as possible after your session.

  • It is BEST to plan your massage or shiatsu treatment immediately before a sauna session, as Infrared heat has been clinically proven to help with muscle restoration and decrease pain. This will help to decrease any back lash pain that can be common after a massage or shiatsu treatment.

  • If you are using the sauna quite frequently, and start to feel tired or lack energy, make sure you supplement your body with trace elements. Remember that you sweat out toxins and chemicals, but also your own nutrients and vitamins.

  • At any point during your sauna if you do not feel well, leave the sauna immediately, especially if you feel weak, light-headed, dizzy or nauseous. If symptoms do not resolve, seek medical attention.
